Any servicemen or servicewomen on here?

Postby Eric Velazquez » Fri Nov 13, 2009 12:24 am

Tomorrow morning, I'm heading down south to San Diego to visit the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan with a close friend of mine. When I was at M&F, I did a story -- shot by Ian Spanier -- on the crew while on deployment in the Gulf of Oman about how these sailors keep fit while at sea.

It opened my eyes to the fact that fitness and healthful living are doubly important to those charged with the security of our country. It's staggering that I sometimes can't muster the discipline to eat healthfully. These men and women do it because they absolutely have to be firing on all cylinders at all times and good food and regular exercise, they told me repeatedly, are key elements in that quest.

So to all the men and women who serve and still manage to honor their bodies while honoring our flag, thank you. You are a blessing!

Eric,

Great note. I look fwd to catching up with you back state-side, it has been a long 15 months. For other Service Members out there, thank you for what you do, it is not always the most glamorous times here, however War is an Ugly thing. Grind it out and keep your men and women first and foremost in your mind set. Best to you all!

Terry, honored to have you here. What can you share about food, fitness and faith over there? When do you head home? Be safe, brother.

Eric/Jimmy --

Thanks for the notes. Eric...I have been surprised this tour. I have lived embedded with my host nation counterparts and had a Chaplain visit several times. It surprised me that they even cared about the smaller groups/teams out there.

Our Daily Bread has been the most important guide for studying that is available to us here. Since I moved on the larger base this past month, attending Chapel and every service is available on Wed/Sun like home. The Chaplains and Ministry teams really do try hard to make a positive impact.

Best to you both and your families! Enjoy Thanksgiving.
